Villa and Farmhouse in Radi in Siena
The Castle of Radi di Creta, situated on the top of a hill just a few kilometres from Siena, was already known in the 10th century and is mentioned in several ancient documents. Located in the heart of Tuscany in the Chianti region near Siena, Castello di Radi has a sun-drenched, panoramic position: you can admire the unique and incomparable landscape of the Crete Senesi all around, with the medieval towers of Siena in the distance.
In the Middle Ages, Radi was a fortified castle with four watchtowers defending the city of Siena, where a Captain sent by the Municipality of Siena resided until 1271.
In 1365, the mercenary company of John Hawkwood (or Giovanni Acuto, as the Italians named him) attacked and set fire to the Castle of Radi, which was subsequently rebuilt but definitively destroyed by the troops of Florence in 1393.
The current Villa di Radi was built by the Marquises Carlo Metello Bichi Ruspoli Forteguerri, the landlords of the property, on the Castle ruins during the 17th century. Since then, the property has belonged to the Bichi Ruspoli Forteguerri family, who have preserved the authenticity of the historical site and its unspoiled surroundings, creating a unique and unparalleled atmosphere.
The Villa, which is surrounded by ancient walls, features a striking entrance gate that opens onto a spacious courtyard with a stone well in the centre, adorned with numerous coats of arms. The 18th- century Chapel and the ancient terraced garden built on the walls of the medieval Castle are truly remarkable, offering a unique view of the Crete Senesi hills.
The Residence
The current owners, Ridolfo and Enrichetta Bichi Ruspoli Forteguerri, personally take care of every detail at the residence and welcome guests in order to ensure they offer first-class treatment.
Villa di Radi, with its Chapel and Farmhouse, is a Member of the Italian Historical Residences Association (ADSI) and is part of Italy’s national artistic heritage.
Villa e Fattoria di Radi Siena is located close to the oldest and most richly artistic cities in Tuscany, such as Siena (12 km), Florence (70 km) and Arezzo (72 km). It enjoys a strategic position for visiting the Chianti region, the Val d’Orcia and Pienza, Montalcino, the Maremma and all the natural and artistic treasures of Tuscany.
Organic Farm
The Villa and Village are at the centre of a very large organic farm (over 1000 hectares) that still produces olive oil, cereals, and forage. In the fields surrounding the Village there are three natural ponds and while strolling around, you may encounter wild animals such as pheasants, squirrels and roe deer or Chianina cattle.
Accommodation and Amenities
Hospitality is offered in the medieval farmhouse called ‘Cerreto’ just next to Villa di Radi, which consists of five fully furnished apartments with independent entrances, exclusive gardens and a swimming pool. Each elegant apartment is different in size and style, featuring wooden ceilings and terracotta floors (see photo). Every unit has a private terrace or a private gazebo in the well- equipped garden with table, chairs and a barbecue. The property also includes two charming bed and breakfast suites.
The location is also ideal for outdoor sports and bike excursions. We are close to the Eroica Cycling Route and the Via Francigena, the ancient pilgrimage road.
In the Village there is a Bar and Snack point called “Sapori di Radi” with a garden, where our guests can enjoy a typical Italian breakfast (included in the price on request) and a selection of the best local wines.
