    Villa Angarano

Villa Angarano is a majestic Palladian villa in Bassano del Grappa, in the province of Vicenza, that belongs to and is still inhabited by the Bianchi Michiel sisters, who are descendants of an ancient doge family.

The project for the Villa’s design is mentioned in the ‘Quattro Libri dell’Architettura’ or ‘Four Books of Architecture’ (1570) by Andrea Palladio, who describes it as follows This place is famous for the precious wines that are made there, for the fruits that come from the land and even more because of the graciousness of its master “.

It was in 1548 that Vicentine nobleman Giacomo Angarano commissioned his illustrious friend Andrea Palladio to build the prestigious Villa as it still stands today, originally designed not only as a farmstead but also as a holiday home and retreat.

Work began in 1556, but in fact the central body remained unfinished. All that remains of the Palladian style in the present-day structure are the ‘barchesse’ arcades that extend over the central body, which has a typically Baroque layout.

The latter was built in the late 17th century and was completed in the early 18th century by Venetian architect Domenico Margutti, a pupil of Baldassare Longhena.

On the right-hand side of the arcade the small noble church of S. Maria Maddalena can be found, which is also attributed to Margutti.

There are a total of eighteen statues at Villa Angarano. Of these, four are located inside the small church, representing sacred subjects and attributed to a sculptor of considerable artistic merit, Giacomo Cassetti, also known as il Marinali (1682-1750).

In 1996, the Villa was added to the list of Italian UNESCO heritage sites.
