The history of the Marchesa Estate
1550 News on the history of the estate begins, the Sauli marquises of Pozzolo purchase the property now used as a farmhouse, called Saula and mentioned in documents as an open portico for the shelter of pilgrims heading to the port of Genoa. From this date the continuous purchases of land by the family began.
1730 The Sauli family dies out, in the land register from the end of the 1600s the lands occupied by the Marchioness are the same as today.
1780 The Marquises Corte or Della Corte enlarged the Villa and build the chapel dedicated to the Guardian Angels in analogy to the family chapel once located on the left side of the main altar of the cathedral of Novi Ligure.
1800 The Napoleonic wars for the conquest of Novi Ligure take place partly on the hills in front of the Marchesa, according to tradition Napoleon sleeps at the Marchesa.
1814 The Corte family, perhaps due to war problems, was forced to sell the property which underwent a series of changes of ownership.
1880 The Marquises Raggio d’Azeglio purchase the Marchesa and the Saula as part of a 5000 acres fiefdom which includes the entire Gavi area.
1980 The Giulini with a series of purchases reconstitute the estate complex in the consistency it had at the time of the Sauli, an important restoration concerns the Villa, the chapel, the Saula building, the ancient cellar and the modern cellar.
