Historical noble residence Palazzo Mantua Benavides lies in the heart of Padua, just a few steps from the Scrovegni Chapel. Redolent with olde-worlde charm, it contains just a few rooms, each one distinct from the others and all featuring precious furnishings. This sixteenth-century Palazzo is the site where architect Bartolomeo Ammannai designed the tallest statue in Europe. Staying here represents taking a journey through history, with rooms that have a unique and exclusive atmosphere. During springtime, the garden is a wonderful place to relax.
The history of Palazzo Mantua Benavides
Palazzo Mantua Benavides, which dates back to the late 15th century, was the home of Marco Mantua Benavides, one of the most interesting personalities of his time. His ancestors came to Italy from Spain, and he became a distinguished professor of jurisprudence at the University of Padua, earning international recognition as an expert in constitutional law. Marco Mantua Benavides’ 16th-century collection is now housed in the Museum of Archaeological Sciences and Art in Palazzo Liviano in Padua. Benavides had a deep appreciation for art and classical culture. He collected art and was a patron of artists, including sculptor and architect Bartolomeo Ammannati, who worked alongside Michelangelo in Florence. Ammannati constructed the Giant Hercules in stone in Padua, inspired by Michelangelo’s marble David scultpure, a triumphal arch reflecting Benavides’ love for the classical world, and also the evocative tomb of the Benavides family in the nearby Eremitani Church.
