The history of La Casetta nel Parco
La Casetta nel Parco (which literally means ‘the little house in the park’) is a historical stone building with roofs that are also made of stone, or ‘piota’ as it is called in the local dialect. It is located within a park that is more than one hectare large and about a hundred metres from the lake. It is said that in the past it was used as a storage place for the famous Lario boats or “lucie”, which were so named in honour of Manzoni’s character Lucia in his novel “The Betrothed”.
Today it is separated from the lake by the road, but originally it was part of a single, very large and important property that spanned the shore of the lake, almost reaching the foot of the mountains behind. Purchased at the end of the 19th century by Engineer Giulio Rubini, who was a Member of Parliament for over twenty years and held the office of Minister three times at the turn of the century, it formerly belonged to the Ferriera di Dongo family founded in the 16th century and was subsequently acquired by the Rubinis at the end of the 18th century together with Villa Rubini Redaelli, to which it is united by a passageway clad in white marble, designed by Architect Francesco Clerici.
