The Domus Laeta is an ancient historical residence that still exudes all the enchantment of days gone by. It is located in the Cilento National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, in the small hamlet of Giungano, in the province of Salerno. The village was founded by the inhabitants of Paestum who, fearing the marauding Saracens, preferred the salubrious climate of the hillside. The residence faces south and offers a captivating panorama stretching all the way down to the sea. It still preserves its intricate 17th-century structure, with watchtowers, loopholes along the walls, grand halls, a historic library and, on the lower floors, stables and mangers, an oil mill made out of stone, cellars and bread ovens. In the garden, which is spacious and offers breath-taking views, the old water-collecting reservoir next to the spring well has been converted into a swimming pool with hydromassage.
Domus Laeta has always been the property of a noble family, and their memories are preserved and can be seen in the furnishings, artifacts, important archives and the collection of rare and ancient books in the exquisite, valuable library, which consists of around 2,000 volumes.
