The history of Casa de Carvalho de Moraes de Puppi
The ‘de Carvalho de Puppi’ Holiday Homes consist of three Friulian noble country houses that have been part of the de Puppi family‘s property since the 1500s. The buildings, which are of particular architectural interest, are accessed through a typical Friulian courtyard adorned with a centuries-old mulberry tree and other species. At the rear, the central avenue known as the ‘Via delle 2 Pietre’ winds its way through the extensive park. The Patriarch of Aquileia was chained to a part of the property on 26 July 1267 by the Count of Gorizia. As a result, the land was deconsecrated and exempted from the payment of the ‘quartese’, a tax formerly paid to the parish of Villanova.
The traditions of three families converge in the name of the historical residence’s owner, Marquis Carlo de Carvalho de Moraes de Puppi Beria di Sale e d’Argentina: his paternal Portuguese heritage, his maternal Friulian lineage, and a third family from the Piedmont region.
His father, Marquis Rodolfo de Carvalho de Moraes, served as an Officer in the Cavalry and was the captain of the military polo team (awarded by a young Princess Elizabeth of England, who later became Queen Elizabeth II). His mother, Countess Agnese de Puppi, belonged to a noble Friulian family of Tuscan origin. The third surname, Beria di Sale e d’Argentina, was acquired through adoption by Elena, the last descendant of the main branch of the Beria di Sale e d’Argentina dynasty, Piedmontese Counts.
In 1972, Carlo, a fervent admirer of nature and the countryside, as well as his Friulian heritage, returned to Villanova del Judrio and began restoring the historic houses.
Today, he has tastefully renovated not only the ‘de Carvalho de Puppi’ Holiday Homes, in keeping with memories of the properties’ distinguished past, but also Villa Beria in Manzano, which is located just 5 km from Villanova and is available for guided tours, cultural events and private functions.
