The history of the Castle of Monferrato
Originating at the dawn of Monferrato and still vibrant today, the Castle of San Giorgio is an exceptional witness to the rich history of this beautiful land. Classified as a Historic Architectural Landmark, it has been home to several prominent Monferrato families, including the Aleramicis, the Paleologis, the Gonzagas and the Gozzanis. Over the centuries, it has been expanded and remodelled multiple times, representing a valuable summary of Piedmontese history and architecture from the early Middle Ages to the present day.

During a visit, guests can also view a precious collection of ancient art, reflecting the family’s dedication. The experience offers a journey through historical architecture, immersing visitors in various past eras. The castle, in fact, boasts over twelve centuries of history and includes traces of many different epochs. The site also preserves ancient geological stratifications and is part of Monferrato’s geological trail.

    Visiting the Castle
The tour begins in the parking area and park, where visitors can observe the medieval foundations of the castle (13th century) and its role as a defensive stronghold up to around 1200. The journey continues through the Italian garden and the Baroque period, highlighting its transformation from a fortress to a noble residence. Visitors will then enter the southern wing, designed during the time of the Risorgimento by renowned architect Giovanni Bollati.

Inside, in addition to the main ‘piano nobile’ floor, the tour incorporates the rock-carved cellar, the ancient well and the stunning panoramic terraces offering views over the landscape extending to the snow-capped Alps.
