Palazzo delle Pietre, located in the heart of Rome on Via delle Coppelle, just a few steps away from Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, has very ancient roots. The Campo Marzio district where it is situated began to flourish during the Republican era of Rome and underwent various transformations over the course of the centuries: first in the Middle Ages, then during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, and right up to the present day with the most recent modifications carried out in the 20th century. Via delle Coppelle originated as a thoroughfare along which the historical fabric of Imperial Rome developed in the Campo Marzio area, connecting this district to the Tiber River at the Port of Ripetta.

This site has consistently played a prominent role over the decades: the current Palazzo delle Pietre was originally built before the 1400s, in correspondence with the famous ex-Neronian Alessandrine Baths constructed in 62 A.D. and in use until the 5th century A.D. It resurfaced in the medieval period with the creation of the ‘Via Recta’, which, retracing the Roman route, was intended to guide pilgrims from the city centre, passing through Via delle Coppelle, on their way to St. Peter’s Basilica.

In the 15th century, Via delle Coppelle became associated with the name of the Vatican Archconfraternity of the Holy Annunciation and remained under its ownership until the mid-19th century. In the 19th and 20th centuries, there were several changes of ownership of the buildings belonging to the Holy Annunciation, which were subsequently split up into a number of different properties.
